Our Mission, Vision & Values

The Magpie is an activist and social justice organization that exists to meet the needs of our community through storytelling. Our mission is to collect the stories of systemically marginalized communities to drive progressive change.

We give changemakers an outlet for self-exploration and the resources they need to make progressive systemic change, including:

  • Paid writing and artistic opportunities that prioritize contributors from systemically marginalized communities

  • Interviews with nonprofit industry leaders to define our current historic moment and provide guidance to future change makers;

  • Research that show community trends and putting them in the context of social justice.

Our Organizing Principles

  1. Writing can be anything, including rebellion.
  2. While other visual mediums are necessary, so is writing.
  3. We prioritize amplifying the voices of systemically marginalized communities.
  4. Organizing to dismantle white supremacy and colonialism in the United States must always start from a lens of antiracism with a background understanding of anti-Blackness.
  5. Global advocacy to dismantle white supremacy requires all of us to work together, with white people taking the lead.
  6. Every human is valid and worthy of love, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, immigration status, faith, or disability status.
  7. Looking at justice through a lens of intersectionality is vital to dismantling all current systems of oppression.
  8. Civilizations rise and fall, but history is forever.
  9. Through community building, education, and accountability, we can hold government and law enforcement systems accountable to the community.
  10. Through these deliberate actions, we can also create support networks that will uplift and sustain local communities.
  11. You cannot understand federal politics without local politics, and you cannot make national change without local change (vice versa). Through our roots in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, we provide a slice of local activism and politics that we all experience in our daily lives.
  12. While having 501(c)3 status from the IRS gives nonprofits certain benefits, it also helps to uphold the systems of oppression that we are trying to combat.
  13. We therefore prioritize remaining extra vigilant that we are remaining accountable to the communities which we serve, not the funders we seek money from.
  14. Care for yourself like you care for the work.
