Hello dear reader and welcome to the March On Foundation Blog!
We are so proud to officially launch this blog, a culmination of years of hard work and planning. In honor of this important occasion, we would like to share the beginning of our story with you:
March On Foundation was founded as March On Maryland in Annapolis, MD in 2017. When our founder and board president M. Eve Hurwitz saw that no one was planning a Women’s March in Annapolis, a sister to the first ever Women’s March in Washington, D.C., she organized the march herself. It was attended by thousands of Marylanders yearning for progress and equity. Essentially, we began with one woman who saw a need and said, “I’m going to be the one to meet it.”
Slowly, through Eve’s unrelenting commitment to her vision of a loving society and the hard work of countless staff and volunteers, we became March On Maryland dba March On Foundation in early 2020. We expanded from a state-level grassroots organization to a nationwide network of activists and projects.
Today, our core team is a small, diverse, and proud all-women team, and we continue in the same spirit from where Eve started us: “Where is the need and how can we meet it?”
We have given over $75,000 in COVID relief to restaurant and hospitality workers impacted by COVID-19. Along with the Drum Major Institute and National Action Network, we co-organized the 2021 March On For Voting Rights, where thousands marched on Washington, D.C. and other major U.S. cities to commemorate the 58th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and demand protected voting rights for all Americans. We fiscally sponsor tens of amazing projects whose missions cover everything from racial justice to climate activism, as well as the intersectionality found between. We are Navy veterans and sustainability experts, Chernobyl researchers and future neurosurgeons.
We want to share our stories with you, and we would love for you to share yours with us. In the next few months, you’ll hear stories about finding an individual identity in a multiracial (but inherently racist) country, how history can inform modern activist practices, and women who took hold of a cause and never let it go.
We welcome everyone to submit not only written blog posts, but any artform through which you express yourself. Whether that’s a drawing, a painting, a poem, or the beginning of your novel, we encourage you to send it over! You can submit any entries to emma@mo-foundation.org.
As a 501(c)(3), here are some guidelines to submitting a piece for consideration:
- Avoid endorsing or supporting specific partisan candidates or advocating for or against partisan legislation.
- If you’re looking for inspiration or wondering if your subject works for the blog, think about our mission statement: we increase civic engagement, protect First Amendment rights, and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.
- We are specifically requesting submissions from historically underrepresented communities, including but certainly not limited to the BIPOC community, the LGBTQIA+ community, the immigrant community, and the disabled community.
- We welcome (let’s be honest, encourage) submissions from outside of the United States.
This blog is a labor of love from the March On Foundation family. We created it in part to provide another platform to amplify marginalized voices and make it easier for activists and progress chasers to express themselves and find a place of unity. We want this to be a space of free expression, creativity, and celebration for every member of our community of humanity. We are so excited to begin this new journey and can’t wait to see what this project will bring to our community.
